In the Timeline, the number of circles in each line corresponds to the number of works published in that year. The Timeline is generated from your current result set. This means that if you have any filters or keyword searches applied, the Timeline will show only the works meeting your criteria.
Each line of circles is a link. Clicking the link will take you to a new page with results filtered to the publication year you selected. (If you select the “click” interaction method, clicking a line of circles in the Timeline will only update the Summary. You can still access the filtered results through the link in the Summary box.)
If you choose an interaction method, this Summary box will show which authors published works in that year. Available interaction methods:
- never
- The Summary will not update.

- When you click, tap, or press the row of circles, the Summary will update.
- Note: This option prevents navigating to the filtered results
by clicking the row of circles. You will still be able to navigate through the
link in the Summary.
- on focus
- When you use the Tab key to navigate each row in the timeline, the
Summary will update.
- The Summary will also update after you click a row with a mouse or touchpad.
However, because the browser will follow the link, you will not be able to read the Summary unless you return to the previous page in your tab history.
- on hover
